Wild Geese Society

Imbolc

The Wild Geese Society of Czechia (WGS) was officially launched at the Society’s first event of 2024, the commemoration of the ancient feast of Imbolc and Brigid the Irish legend (goddess or saint take your pick!) who is associated with it.

Imbolc has been celebrated in Ireland for over five thousand years and this celebration was continued by the Celts both when they were still pagan and even when they were christianised. It heralded the beginning of Spring, the season of fertility and growth, and its celebration and veneration of Brigid spread throughout all the Gaelic-speaking lands.

Forty-three wild geese, including 21 fledglings came together in the Čítárna Unijazz in Žižkov, Prague, to carry on the ancient traditions, which included the weaving of Brigid’s crosses, poetry recitations, songs both in Irish and English among the several activities. The Wild Geese owe particular thanks to Louise Kelleher, Lorraine Traynor, Sean O’Sullivan and Kirsten Roberts for their organisation of the event.

Lorraine led a demonstration of Brigid’s cross-making for all ages. Meanwhile the fledglings could honour the goddess of creativity by colouring in pictures of her, or trying their hand at origami led by Filip (16). Photographs of the event were taken by our web designer Ivan Barta. Lucie (5) told the story of the saint in a brilliant rendering of ‘St Bridget’s Cloak’, Emily (11) did the Dubs proud with a lovely version of ‘Molly Malone’, and Isabel (11) led the attendance in a rousing chorus of ‘Oro’ Sé do bheatha ‘bhaile’.

The term ‘Wild Geese’ is used to describe the Irish diaspora and the many Irish emigrants who, for one reason or another left the ‘sweet shamrock shore’ to adventure in foreign climes. The newly formed Wild Geese Society of Czechia explores the impact of the diaspora in its various forms on these lands at the heart of Europe. The Society is inclusive of all nationalities (we are all wild geese!) and, in particular, welcomes our Czech sisters and brothers with whom we share so much in common, including our Celtic genes.

There are many more events planned throughout the year so check out our website for those that interest you. Take flight and adventure with us!
