Wild Geese Society

Bealtaine

On Saturday 27 April, a gaggle of several dozen Wild Geese of all ages flocked west to Nižbor, ancestral home of the Celts, to celebrate the feast of Bealtaine, which marks the arrival of summer in the Celtic calendar.

In the castle courtyard it was a far cry from an Irish summer: the sun was splitting the stones.

For a modest cover charge, the organisers laid on all the ingredients of a fun family day out: Celtic music and dance, period costumes and crafts, and a children’s corner, while refreshments were on hand for feasting as desired!

A battle between Celts and Romans was a highlight of the day: goslings as young as three did us proud in bravely facing down the enemy.

A special shout out to Hannah (9) who wore a hole in the dance floor with her high kicks and energetic Irish dancing steps.

Bualadh bos to the Celtic Cultural Information Centre in Nižbor for organising the event, and many thanks to all that made the day trip out to join the fun.

See you in Nižbor in October for Samhain, the beginning of the Celtic New Year.
